If you&#8217;re already enjoying the trials and tribulations of a new puppy then all the better to get a good book and learn to work with your lil&#8217; pup!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So let&#8217;s take a closer look&nbsp;at the &#8220;real&#8221; cost of a puppy more specifically let&#8217;s answer the question: How much does a Labrador Retriever puppy cost?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Our current situation:<\/strong> We are&nbsp;looking for a Labrador Retriever puppy we can raise as a service dog. We are going to use some of the numbers we know from research and experience raising and training Labrador Retrievers to find an <strong>overall total lifetime cost of owning a puppy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First-Year&nbsp;Cost of&nbsp;a Lab Puppy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your initial adoption fee will vary greatly depending on where you decide to get your puppy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Shelter: $37<\/strong> &#8211; We checked the <a href=\"http:\/\/awos.petfinder.com\/shelters\/CA673.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carson Animal Shelter<\/a> website and the adoption fee is still the same $37.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rescue: $400<\/strong> &#8211; We fostered litters of puppies for Cuddly Canines and their adoption fee for a puppy is $350-$400.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Breeder: $1,500<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8211; We called over a dozen reputable breeders and $1,500 was actually on the lower end for purchasing one of their puppies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for an 8-week-old purebred Labrador Retriever puppy then you&#8217;ll have some difficulty finding one in the shelters or rescues. However, it&#8217;s not impossible as we&#8217;ve seen purebred puppies on rescue websites from time to time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our next puppy will likely be purchased from a breeder so we&#8217;ll use the corresponding cost listed above. Also, remember the Labrador Retriever we are using in this example is a large breed dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the puppy you decide to bring home is a smaller breed dog then some of these expenses will likely be less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First-Year Costs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is&nbsp;there are several expensive one-time costs you must pay during the first year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bad news is there are several expensive one-time costs you must pay during the first year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Did he just repeat himself? $90 per session &#8211;&nbsp;<\/strong>per Google<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vitamins\/Supplements: $100 a year &#8211;&nbsp;<\/strong>our older dogs actually started taking supplements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fence: $1,500 &#8211;&nbsp;<\/strong>to contain your puppy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unforeseen&nbsp;Puppy Costs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve hit a few unforeseen costs with our puppies, but lucky for us they haven&#8217;t been ginormous. &nbsp;Here are a few we&#8217;ve had:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Linus had a nasty-looking hot spot a few years back. &nbsp;Extra vet visit ~$200<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stetson had skin allergies that plagued him for several years. &nbsp;Half a dozen vet visits, various medications ~$1,000<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Derby had chronic ear infections. &nbsp;4 additional&nbsp;vet visits + meds ~$400<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dublin eats a batch of chocolate cookies. &nbsp;Emergency vet visit ~$200<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dublin swallowed one of his plush toys. Emergency vet visit ~$200<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve been very lucky and avoided the major unforeseen puppy costs. &nbsp;Some of our friends haven&#8217;t been as lucky:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/my-friend-has-spent-over-10k-on-his-dog\/\">Our friend&#8217;s American Staffordshire Terrier tore both ACLs. &nbsp;Surgeries&nbsp;~$10,000+<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Another friend&#8217;s American Bulldog tore both ACLs. &nbsp;Surgeries ~thousands of dollars.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our friend&#8217;s puppy&nbsp;had a Liver shunt. &nbsp;Surgery ~thousands&nbsp;of dollars.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our friend&#8217;s Lab had to have eye surgery. &nbsp;Surgery ~thousands of dollars.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Our friend&#8217;s Lab swallowed a sock. &nbsp;Surgery ~thousands of dollars.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see on top of the lifetime cost you may also have the added unforeseen costs that could end up in the thousands of dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a good idea to save up some extra money just in case your best pal requires an unforeseen surgery or visit to the vet&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We haven&#8217;t looked into pet insurance, but if you think you will have trouble paying a big, unforeseen cost then you might consider and look into getting pet insurance for your puppy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>UPDATE:<\/strong>&nbsp;Unfortunately, we weren&#8217;t able to stay lucky. A few months back <a href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/linus-the-first-puppy-in-training\/\">Linus was diagnosed with congestive heart failure<\/a>. We spent a good chunk of the next 10 days at the emergency vet. After an over $6,000 vet bill and deteriorating health, they told us he&#8217;d have to spend a week in the hospital for an additional $12,000 $15,000.
