{"id":21359,"date":"2016-03-18T12:50:38","date_gmt":"2016-03-18T20:50:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/?p=21359"},"modified":"2023-10-23T15:00:32","modified_gmt":"2023-10-23T22:00:32","slug":"command-vs-cue-in-puppy-training-what-is-the-difference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/command-vs-cue-in-puppy-training-what-is-the-difference\/","title":{"rendered":"Command Vs Cue: In Puppy Training What Is The Difference?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I&#8217;ve never studied linguistics, but I&#8217;ve noticed there are some subtleties in words and language that I need to pay attention to in personal life, business, and of course in the puppy training world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This became very apparent when I first learned the&nbsp;difference between a <strong>command vs cue<\/strong>. &nbsp;At first glance the two words seem very similar, but in fact they are very different.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/command-vs-cue-in-puppy-training-what-is-the-difference\/command-v-cue-1000\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-21365\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/command-v-cue-1000.jpg\" alt=\"Command vs Cue\" class=\"wp-image-21365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/command-v-cue-1000.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/command-v-cue-1000-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/command-v-cue-1000-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/command-v-cue-1000-768x768.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Command vs Cue<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Command Vs Cue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When I first heard the word <strong>cue<\/strong> replace the word <strong>command <\/strong>at puppy training class&nbsp;I wasn&#8217;t sure what to make of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve been working in the technical training industry for nearly 20 years and I&#8217;ve seen the industry choose new terms&nbsp;to replace existing terminology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back in the late 90&#8217;s I was told that the industry thought the term trainer had a negative connotation as if we were training dogs (oh goodness the horror&#8230;sarcasm) not people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I slowly noticed a new set of words were rolled out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Trainers<\/strong> &#8211; were now <em>Subject Matter Experts (SME)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Students<\/strong> &#8211; were now <em>Learners<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>So, was the term <strong>cue<\/strong> basically the same thing as a <strong>command<\/strong> and just the dog training industry moving on to&nbsp;new terminology?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a Command?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/browse\/command?s=t\">Command<\/a><\/strong> <em>verb<\/em> &#8211; as defined in dictionary.com<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>to direct with specific authority or prerogative; order<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to require authoritatively; demand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to have or exercise authority or control over; be master of; have at one&#8217;s bidding or disposal<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a Cue?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/cue\">Cue<\/a> <\/strong><em>noun &#8211;&nbsp;<\/em>as defined in&nbsp;dictionary.com<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>anything said or done, on or off stage, that is followed by a specific line or action<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>anything that excites to action; stimulus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a hint; intimation; guiding suggestion<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see the two words are very different. &nbsp;Lets take a look at a definition from the <a href=\"https:\/\/clickertraining.com\/node\/1785\">Karen Pryor Clicker Training website<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;A command implies a threat: &#8220;Do it or I will make you.&#8221; A command is given before the behavior is learned, and it can be enforced if the dog does not comply. For example, a trainer may teach &#8220;sit&#8221; by pushing down on the dog&#8217;s rump while saying sit, repeating the word and action over and over until the dog figures out that the word sit goes with the action of sitting, and that sitting fast enough will prevent the rump pushing. In the early stages of this kind of training, the dog associates the command &#8220;sit&#8221; with all kinds of stimuli and with actions that have nothing to do with the dog sitting on its own&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And a little further down:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8230;&#8221;A cue is completely different from a command. There is no threat implied with a cue. A cue is like a green light that tells the dog that now is the time to execute a behavior for the chance of reinforcement&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Are We Training Archer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that we know the difference between a command and a cue what are we teaching Archer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do we give him commands or cues?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had a plan for Archer. His breeder started <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B07J1TFFZ6?maas=maas_adg_4BDACE3F2C69E1155CD6450F3B3ADA7B_afap_abs&amp;ref_=aa_maas&amp;tag=maas\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow\">clicker<\/a> training him from day one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My goal was to extend what Archer had already learned and continue clicker training him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had a remedial background in clicker training after attending service dog training classes with <a href=\"http:\/\/TenderLovingCanines.org\/\">Tender Loving Canine Assistance Dogs (TLCAD)<\/a>, reading <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1U9UwAQ\">Karen Pryor&#8217;s Don&#8217;t Shoot The Dog<\/a>, and other clicker training publications, but I had very little practical training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, I had worked with some of the service dogs at TLCAD and yes, I had worked at home with my personal dogs: Stetson, Linus, and Raven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, I wanted more guidance and that&#8217;s where <a href=\"https:\/\/wagsandwiggles.com\/#!training-for-life\/cdys\">Wags and Wiggles Training For Life (TFL)<\/a>&nbsp;program came into play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wags and Wiggles was perfect for Archer&#8217;s training!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Touted as Southern California&#8217;s&nbsp;Largest Clicker Training School of Positive Reinforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s a little blurb from <a href=\"https:\/\/wagsandwiggles.com\/#!training\/c24gm\">Wags and Wiggles<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;Our goal is for every human and dog to achieve the best relationship possible. We strongly believe in giving the human and dog end of the leash positive feedback during learning. We use a combination of food, praise, toys, real life rewards and clicker training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;Old training methods focused solely on stopping bad behavior through the use of force. Wags &amp; Wiggles focuses on <a href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/benefits-of-positive-reinforcement-for-your-dog\/\">positive reinforcement of good behavior<\/a>.
