The Neonatal Stage (0 to 2 weeks)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the newborn puppy growth stage that lasts until <a href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/our-litter-of-golden-retriever-pups-week-2\/\">two weeks of age<\/a>.&nbsp;At this developmental stage, puppies are blind and deaf. They don\u2019t have teeth and can\u2019t regulate their own body temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expect puppies at this point to sleep almost constantly and their mother will take care of everything, keeping them warm, feeding them, and keeping them clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. The Transitional Stage (2 to 4 weeks)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At this <a href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/our-litter-of-golden-retriever-pups-week-3\/\">puppy growth stage<\/a>, they will start to open up their eyes and respond to sounds, light, and movement around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is also when your puppy will eliminate without their mother\u2019s help and their teeth will start to come in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You will also notice a puppy at this point starting to get more mobile, although they will still tend to crawl instead of walking. They do, however, have enough strength to stand up, but will stumble a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A puppy in this developmental stage will just be starting to recognize their siblings and mother. By this time, Labrador puppies will have their eyes fully open and most will be at least partly open. Ears open at this point too and your puppy will begin to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Period of Awakening of Senses (3 to 4 weeks)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/our-litter-of-golden-retriever-pups-week-4\/\">At this period<\/a>, a puppy develops various senses rapidly. They start to get fully alert and aware of their environment and may recognize you and other humans that are frequently around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this stage, you should take steps to avoid sudden changes or loud noises since negative occasions can affect the development and the dog\u2019s personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is crucial that the puppy still stays with the mother at this point since they are learning \u2018how to be a dog\u2019, how to act themselves and how to interact with others of their species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. The Socialization Period (4 to 7 Weeks)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once a puppy is around four weeks old, they start to learn the most important things in life-related to social development. They will learn to not bite all the time and how to interact with their siblings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interactions with humans are especially important between five and <a href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/our-litter-of-golden-retriever-pups-week-7\/\">seven weeks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is also <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/dogtime.com\/puppies\/1130-puppy-behavior-basics-hsus\" target=\"_blank\">the time they will start to understand discipline thanks to their mother<\/a>. She will start weaning her puppies and teaching them manners, like acknowledging she is in charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the owner, you can start introducing food to your puppy when they are around four weeks old. Start small and begin to give them more food as the mother continues to wean them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should also continue handling the puppy every day. However, be sure not to separate them from their siblings or mother for over ten minutes each day, since this can lead to issues with training and socialization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dogs who are separated too soon may also be nervous and more likely to bark and bite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this period, let the mother dog take care of discipline; you should not correct the dog for mouthing or housebreaking mistakes until later in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. 2nd Socialization and Fearful Period (8 to 12 Weeks)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although not all puppies go through a fearful period, most pass through a time where they are afraid or terrified of nearly everything, including items they used to be okay with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help ease them through this process, avoid traumatic events, loud voices, or harsh discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should also make sure your pooch has plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/what-is-puppy-socialization\/\">human contact during this stage<\/a>. If you want, you can start leash training and even <a href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/what-commands-do-you-teach-a-service-dog\/\">teach simple commands<\/a> such as sit, down, stay and come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of development, you will notice that your puppy can sleep through the whole night and starts to develop better control of its bowels and bladder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this time, you should make sure you don\u2019t bring your dog to areas un-vaccinated or stray dogs frequent since they will be more prone to a fatal disease, such as parvovirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most vets suggest that new outings should wait until they are fully vaccinated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>QUICK TIP:<\/strong> Most puppies go to their new homes during this stage. They will be more independent and may ignore the basic commands that they know very well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this happens, firmly and gently reinforce the commands and other training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also notice your pup starting to test your authority by play biting or similar actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can <a href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/the-ultimate-guide-how-to-stop-a-puppy-from-biting-and-nipping\/\">stop play biting<\/a> this by saying \u201cno bite\u201d or \u201cno\u201d and then ignoring them for a few minutes. You can also redirect your dog to a toy that they can bite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should keep playing with your puppy on a regular basis at this time, but don\u2019t wrestle or play tug of war. Either can end up teaching your pooch that it is okay to fight with you and challenge your authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. The Ranking Period (3 to 6 Months)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When your puppy is between four and six months old, you should expect them to be somewhat bratty, showing more willfulness and independence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dogbreedinfo.com\/breedingdogs\/stagespuppydevelopment.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more likely to test your limits<\/a> and may try to show dominance over children or other family members. They begin to understand ranking, in terms of dominance and submission, and where they &#8216;stand in a pack.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Counteract this by keeping up the training with basic commands and obedience. Don\u2019t be lulled into confidence, however, and avoid letting them off the leash unless you are in a confined space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they fail to listen to you or come when called, it can be dangerous as it puts them at risk of injury when in public. It can also hurt future responses to you, making them less likely to listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is also when your dog will be teething, so give them toys like frozen dog <a href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/kong-classic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Kong toys<\/a> to relieve pressure and pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chewing behaviors will also start growing at this point so look for some <a href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/best-chew-toys-for-a-puppy\/\">safe chew toys to keep your dog entertained<\/a>. <del>This is when hormonal changes start to occur and is the ideal time to spay or neuter your pup.<\/del><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>UPDATE:<\/strong> Back when I got my first puppy, Linus my vet recommended spaying\/neutering puppies at 6 months old. More recent research suggests that early spay\/neuter can affect a dog&#8217;s health. UC Davis published a study comparing the long-term health effects of <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0102241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">neutering in Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. This is a fun and exciting time for your pooch since they will be learning, full of energy, and exuberant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this time, it is important to remember that even if your puppy now looks like a grown-up dog, they are still a puppy, at least in its mental capacity and emotional maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Work to slowly increase training and other activities. You can even work on advanced training such as agility or herding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another option is to simply keep training them to ensure they interact in a non-aggressive and non-threatening way with other animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also possible that your dog will go through another fearful period of time at some point after they reach six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all will experience this, but if yours do, don\u2019t force them to face their fears unless they are ready.
