You\u2019ve put time into his house training, crate training, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time your puppy reaches four months old, it\u2019s a light-bulb moment. He\u2019s learning and retaining his training at a rapid pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He usually is <a href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/crate-training-puppies\/\">crate trained<\/a>, assuming you\u2019ve worked with getting him used to being crated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s getting his adult teeth. So he\u2019s losing those needle-like shark teeth. And he\u2019s mouthing less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The muscles controlling his bladder are starting to become fully developed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s often done with all of his vaccinations around four months old and can be taken more places after they\u2019re effective.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re a proud puppy parent. It looks like smooth sailing from here on in. Then, you seem to hit the proverbial wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All your work seems to have gone out the window after he\u2019s four months old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t despair. There are reasons for this happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Does Puppy Potty Training Regression Occur?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many reasons why a puppy may seem to have forgotten his prior potty training. The regression usually occurs between when the pup\u2019s four months and a year old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regression is a psychological term that describes reverting back to an earlier <a href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/labrador-puppies-stages-of-puppy-development-week-by-week\/\">stage of development<\/a>. So the pup may return to a stage when he wasn\u2019t potty trained well or at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regression is normal, so don\u2019t panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. <strong>Change in Circumstances<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Any change in circumstances, like scheduling his potty breaks and when he eats, may result in some accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, after four months old a puppy\u2019s feeding schedule changes, He may go from <a href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/when-to-switch-a-puppy-to-two-meals-a-day-feeding-guide\/\">three meals to two a day<\/a> or from four to three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, when he has to potty will change then. What goes in must come out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So your schedule will change too. But it may take a while to get the pup back on track with his new <a href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/my-puppy-pees-a-lot-is-it-normal-a-puppy-potty-schedule\/\">potty schedule<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Changes in household members or their schedules may also occur. Sometimes job or school schedules change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And this may mean that the dog isn\u2019t taken out as often to go to the bathroom. He may have accidents then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or sometimes the stress of household changes may upset the puppy, causing him to potty more often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <strong>Unreasonable Expectations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes we expect too much. The four-month-old puppy was doing so well, that we may start to expect too much of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We may expect him to \u201chold it\u201d for too long or otherwise ask too much of him too soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. <strong>Too Much Time in the Crate<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>After a puppy is doing really well with his potty training, sometimes we expect too much of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And he may be left in his crate too long and have an unavoidable accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a general rule, puppies can \u201chold it\u201d for about one hour longer than their age in months.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So a four-month-old puppy will be able to not potty in his crate for about five hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So remember to still take him out to potty regularly on schedule from his crate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. <strong>Medical Issues<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Medical issues may have developed. You may have gotten him at 12 weeks of age.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, When he\u2019s 16 weeks old, he hasn\u2019t had enough training yet to fully understand what\u2019s expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. <strong>His Brain Chemistry Has Changed<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Around four months old, your puppy\u2019s brain chemistry is changing. His brain is still developing and he\u2019s processing more and more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His brain is changing as he enters adolescence and approaches adulthood. This may result in many problematic behaviors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Essentially, his mind can easily get jumbled with what he\u2019s already learned. So one of his setbacks may be in the house training area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. <strong>Too Much Freedom Too Soon<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since your pup\u2019s been so great at his four-month birthday, he\u2019s probably been given more freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just make sure to not give him too much out-of-sight freedom too soon. Don\u2019t panic. Consistency and patience are important. So is a routine. Go back to basics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Retrain<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>He needs a refresher course. You\u2019ll need to go back a few steps and retrain your puppy as if he hasn\u2019t been trained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t give him any out-of-sight freedom. Take him out to potty more often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Puppies usually have to potty after sleeping, eating, playing, or chewing. I even interrupt the play and take the puppy out to potty to avoid an accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So use your potty phrase when you take him out. He has more bladder control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Deal With Behavioral Issues<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If your pup has separation anxiety or is going through a fear period, you may need professional help to work through the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most dogs outgrow fear periods. You just have to make sure not to over-expose him to things he fears during that time. It may take days or weeks for him to go back to the confident dog he was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Have Him Checked Out Medically<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve tried to re-train and he still is having accidents, a vet visit is probably in order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Not To Do If You&#8217;re Experiencing Puppy Potty Regression <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s frustrating if your puppy regresses in his house training after he\u2019s four months old. But it\u2019s still important to have a ton of patience during this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And use positive training methods. Harsh ones can only make things worse or lead to more problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t Punish<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many years ago, some people regularly used harsh methods to try to house train a dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They swatted the pup with a newspaper or put the dog\u2019s nose in his accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or they yelled at the pup too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such methods don\u2019t teach the pup what to do.
