The recent earthquakes and tsunami&#8217;s in Japan have me thinking about whether or not we (that includes me and my three dogs) are prepared for our next disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may remember a few years back we had some horrific fires here in Southern California which prompted me to put together an article on <a title=\"Pet Evacuation Safety Tips\" href=\"https:\/\/puppyintraining.com\/pet-evacuation-safety-tips\/\">Pet Evacuation Safety Tips<\/a>.&nbsp; This time another natural disaster(s), earthquakes and tsunami&#8217;s have me worried and now researching the best ways to take care of myself and my dogs if and when our next disaster hits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Earthquake Safety Tips For Pets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are a resident of southern California like me then you probably have experienced some minor and perhaps some major earthquakes.&nbsp; I was in Arizona when the Northridge quake hit, but I was right on top of the epicenter when we had the earthquake in Big Bear about 19 years ago and boy that was scary.&nbsp; After the first initial jolt there were aftershocks for hours and each aftershock had us worried that it would be next big one.&nbsp; The Big Bear quake was only a 6.5 the earthquake in Japan was an astonshing 8.9!!!&nbsp; I can&#8217;t imagine what that earthquake felt like!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We put together a list on our previous article on <a title=\"Pet Evacuation Safety Tips\" href=\"..\/pet-evacuation-safety-tips\/\">Pet Evacuation Safety Tips<\/a>, but we wanted to add a little more so we researched the web and came across a few other great articles on <a title=\"ASPCA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aspca.org\/pet-care\/general-pet-care\/disaster-preparedness\">Disaster Preparedness from the ASPCA<\/a>, <a title=\"Pet Safety\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adt.com\/resources\/safety-tips\">Pet Safety from the ASPCA<\/a>, and Pet Safety Tips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few earthquake safety tips for your pets:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make sure you are prepared for any kind of disaster<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get a rescue alert sticker.&nbsp; My parents have one, but I don&#8217;t have one at the house.&nbsp; This will alert any rescuers to all the pets in your home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find a place you can take your pets in case of disaster.&nbsp; Not all Red Crosses accept pets.&nbsp; Check to see if local hotels accept pets.&nbsp; Check with friends and family.&nbsp; Talk to your local veterinarian about boarding and kennels in the area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We work with our Guide Dog puppies in training and try to introduce them to people in uniform like firefighters and police officers.&nbsp; If you have the opportunity to introduce your pet to a person in uniform it could be helpful when a real emergency arises.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure all your pets have collars and tags<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microchip your pets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find a trusted neighbor who might be able to look out for your pets just in case you&#8217;re not home<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you evacuate make sure your pets are secure at all times.&nbsp; They may act strange or frightened during an evacuation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure you have an earthquake preparedness kit for your pet &#8211; <em>see below<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Earthquake Preparedness Kit For Your Pet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some things we recommend you pack in your <em>Earthquake Preparedness Kit For Your Pet<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In watertight containers, pack at least three days of food and water for each pet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include medicine and veterinary records<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B002PXEPJM\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=minlikwat-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=B002PXEPJM\">Pet First Aid Kit<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B002PXEPJM\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\"><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Collars with ID tags<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Harness or leash<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Crate or a Pet carrier<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sanitation supplies such as plastic bags<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disinfectants and paper towels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Portable water and food bowls<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pet Toys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Photo of your pet in case he gets lost<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blankets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flashlight<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bottled water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gcOIuc\">Pet Emergency Travel Guide (affiliate link)<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=B002TMMV9A\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on your pet whether it be cat, dog, bird, etc. you may need extra or different supplies then the things mentioned above.&nbsp; Think about your pet and what you would need to take him on the road for a few days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lucky for me I have most of this stuff assembled in Dublin&#8217;s outing bag.&nbsp; However, now that I write this list I&#8217;m realizing even though I have one of these<em> earthquake preparedness kits<\/em> together (basically Dublin&#8217;s outing bag) I need to prepare something for Stetson and Linus too.&nbsp; That&#8217;s something I think I&#8217;ll do this weekend!&nbsp; By the way, carrying stuff around for three dogs might be a bit difficult so I&#8217;m going to keep my eye out for a nice easy to carry bag in case of emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re like me hopefully the Japan earthquakes and tsunami&#8217;s have got you off your butt, forced you to take action, and prepare your home and pets for the next possible disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you have a disaster plan for your pets?&nbsp;
