Not to mention that eating them instead of peeing on them disrupts the potty training<\/a> progress!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now having said that, there are effective techniques that keep puppies from chewing pee pads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lucky for you, we\u2019ve compiled the most effective ones here in this comprehensive guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ready to tackle this problem? Let\u2019s get right down to business!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Before we dive into the most effective strategies and tips to tackle this problem, let\u2019s first understand that puppies explore the world with their mouths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That\u2019s a natural instinct all puppies are born with, and there\u2019s nothing you can do to change that other than embrace it, and redirect it! <\/p>\n\n\n\n Having said that, puppy chewing ticks all of the following boxes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n So when your puppy is eating a pee pad, you\u2019ll have to ask yourself what triggered it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Are they simply bored and exploring ways to entertain themselves? <\/p>\n\n\n\n Are they teething and looking for something to soothe their pain with?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Or are they anxious and looking for ways to calm themselves down?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Once you\u2019ve established the root cause, you can begin to tailor the training approach for your respective puppy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n With that in mind, here are 7 pieces of advice that should help you get your puppy to stop chewing his pee pads!<\/p>\n\n\n\n If your puppy is tempted by the edges of the pads, your first course of action should be to secure them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n You can do that a couple of different ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One option is to use duct tape<\/a> all around the pee pad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n However, that\u2019s only going to work if you place your puppy pee pads on a hard surface like tile and laminate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n If you use duct tape on hardwood floors, it leaves a residue that\u2019s hard to clean – been there, done that, and I don\u2019t recommend it unless you like lengthy cleaning chores!<\/p>\n\n\n\n So if you want to secure puppy pee pads on hardwood floors or carpet, a specific puppy pee pad holder<\/a> is going to be a better option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n These pee pad holders have latches that hold the puppy pads in place without damaging your floors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Next, make sure to offer your little furry friend specific puppy chew toys. <\/p>\n\n\n\n That way, they\u2019re much less likely to chew on inappropriate things such as their puppy pee pads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Since their teething pain doesn\u2019t stop until all of their adult teeth come in, they need an outlet for their pain until then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That\u2019s usually around 6 months of age. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Now, our favorite puppy chew toys are the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tips: Filled Kongs last the longest if you freeze them for a few hours, plus the cold sensation soothes their teething pain! <\/p>\n\n\n\n You can also use empty Kongs to make bully sticks last longer. Here\u2019s how<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n My puppies Missy & Buzz loved their frozen Kongs when their adult teeth came in, so I made sure to always keep several in the freezer section of my fridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n If you want to add some plush fun for your puppy too, consider getting them the Hide-A-Squirrel plush dog toy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s available in 4 different sizes, includes 5 plush squirrels and you have the option to buy replacement animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why do we suggest all these different puppy chew toys?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because ideally, you\u2019ll want to rotate them so your puppy doesn\u2019t get bored with one chew toy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Some puppies also favor one material over another, so we suggest you try a few different ones until you\u2019ve found a few favorites you can rotate between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n By rotating, we mean that you offer them a different chew toy every couple days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n If you give them access to all of their chew toys at once, you risk what we call \u201ctoy fatigue\u201d, which means your pup won\u2019t be playing with or chewing on any of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Additionally, when you\u2019re working on teaching your puppy not to chew on their pee pads, you\u2019ll want to praise them for chewing on their puppy chew toys instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can say things like Good boy\/girl<\/em>, Yes<\/em>, or Good job, puppy<\/em>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n Always remember to use an upbeat, happy voice when you praise your puppy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n In dog training, this approach is known as positive reinforcement training<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Also, you\u2019ll have to supervise your puppy to stop them from chewing his pee pads!<\/p>\n\n\n\n Once you catch them in the act of chewing the pee pads, say NO in a firm way, but without yelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Next, offer them a puppy chew toy instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When your puppy starts chewing on the chew toy and leaves the pee pads alone, shower them with verbal praise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That lets them know that you\u2019re happy with their choice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n If your puppy doesn\u2019t seem interested in the chew toy, try to offer them a different one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For example, if they don\u2019t seem interested in a rubber chew, try offering them an edible chew like a bully stick or a filled Kong. <\/p>\n\n\n\n If they\u2019re not interested in edible chew toys either, try to engage them in playtime instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n As a last resort, you\u2019ll have to physically remove them from the pee pad, either with a leash or by carrying them. <\/p>\n\n\n\n It\u2019s never too early to teach your dog to \u201cleave it\u201d, and puppyhood is a prime time for learning this command. <\/p>\n\n\n\n An easy way to teach the \u201cleave it\u201d command is when your puppy is leashed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So leash your puppy and walk up to the pee pad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Watch your puppy closely and right before they\u2019re about to begin chewing on the pee pad, say \u201cleave it\u201d and walk them away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Reward them for being such a good puppy! You can either give them a tasty bite of something extra good (tiny bits of cheese or hot dog) or praise them verbally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n I used both approaches with my puppies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Repeat this exercise 3 to 4 times, then take a break. <\/p>\n\n\n\n You\u2019ll want to practice this command (and others) on a daily basis to reinforce its effectiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Tip: Keep a small sandwich ziplock bag<\/a> in your fridge that you fill with tiny cuts of cheese and hot dogs. That way, you can easily grab them for your training sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That said, consistency and patience are the key to successful dog training!<\/p>\n\n\n\n As an additional incentive to get your puppy to stop chewing his pee pads, you can also apply some bitter-tasting spray for dogs<\/a> on the edges of the pee pads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The strong smell and taste deters many puppies from chewing, although some do persist, and unfortunately, my puppies belonged in that category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For those puppies, try a mixture of water and white vinegar. Fill it into a spray bottle<\/a> and apply it to the edges of the pee pads.
